Hello! I'm Kyle, a senior Mechanical Engineering student at Virginia Tech with a passion for aerospace and mechanical design. This portfolio highlights the engineering projects, research, and internships that have shaped my journey.
Senior Mechanical Engineering student at VT (Aug. 2023 to May 2027)
Engineering internships at NASA Langley, Lockheed Martin, and FasTech
Engineering leadership roles across aerospace design teams and undergraduate research (Recovery Lead, Aerodynamics Lead, Research Lead)
Passionate about developing cutting-edge aerospace hardware alongside engineers who share the same drive and curiosity
UAS SmokeStake, a Virginia Tech senior design project sponsored by Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWC Dahlgren). Our team will design, build, integrate, and test a transportable multi-sUAS launch system for deployment from unmanned ground and surface vehicles, with a focus on mechanical design, system integration, packaging, and survivability for defense applications.
Worked within Lockheed Martin's Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Rapid Prototyping group, designing and integrating mechanical systems for next generation autonomous aircraft. My work ranged from conceptual CAD design and payload integration to manufacturing documentation, PCB mechanical layout, and prototype development. Projects emphasized rapid engineering iteration, cross functional collaboration, and designing hardware for real world testing.
As an Additive Manufacturing Engineering Intern at FasTech, I supported the development of large scale Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing processes for aerospace and defense applications, leading manufacturing studies, developing aluminum printing parameters, and gaining hands on experience with industrial production systems and advanced metal additive manufacturing.
Conducted aerospace acoustics research within NASA Langley's Aeroacoustics Branch, investigating how ground surfaces influence aircraft noise propagation and measurement accuracy. I designed and executed large scale experiments, processed acoustic data using MATLAB, and analyzed the effects of frequency and microphone placement to support future FAA aircraft noise testing standards.
Contributed to the design, manufacturing, testing, and launch operations of Virginia Tech's collegiate launch vehicle program. My work has included recovery systems, stage separation mechanisms, composite manufacturing, structural testing, and launch operations, supporting the team's long term goal of developing a launch vehicle capable of placing a payload into orbit.
Designed, manufactured, and tested hardware for Virginia Tech's student built unmanned aircraft program. Throughout multiple leadership and engineering roles, I contributed to aerodynamics, structures, recovery systems, and aircraft integration while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams through the complete engineering design cycle, from concept development to manufacturing and flight testing.
Conducting undergraduate research focused on advancing Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing through experimental process development and data driven analysis. My work investigates how deposition strategies influence bead geometry and manufacturing performance, combining large scale experimentation, laser scanning, MATLAB analysis, and dimensionless modeling to improve understanding of metal additive manufacturing processes.
My passion for engineering was grown through KidWind, where I helped design, build, and test competitive wind turbines, leading my high school team to multiple KidWind World Championships. Years later, I returned as a KidWind Fellow, mentoring students, supporting the World Championship, and developing educational resources to help inspire and prepare the next generation of engineers.
Engineering is a huge part of my life and interests, but I also enjoy getting outside, traveling, and experiencing new places. I like taking on challenges that push me outside my comfort zone. I believe those experiences have helped shape the way I approach engineering and problem solving.
Some of my favorite hobbies are getting to spend time with my family and 3 younger sisters, jazz, fishing, playing paintball, rockwall climbing, camping, running/lifting and skiing/snowboarding.
